In the early years the rally was called "Munich - Breslau" and was, as the name implies, first launched in 1995 from Munich with 35 cars, 20 motorcycles and 5 trucks at the start.

Due to the long journey from Munich to the first site in Poland, then the rally was started four years later from Berlin. As the rally convoy was now 65 cars, 50 motorcycles and 15 trucks, and various support vehicles went with it, the organizers were in fact very politely asked to move the starting point. because of the resulting traffic chaos at the Alexanderplatz.

Meanwhile the event could now no longer be taken out of motor sport, and so several new terrains were offered to the organization. It was decided to move the start to the vicinity of the lignite mine in Senftenberg. From 2001, this mine was use d to given its proximity to the Polish stages.

For the 10th anniversary the participants piled up, 106 cars, 65 motorcycles and 38 trucks were at the start. Until 2006, the start was in Cottbus near Senftenberg, until the flooding of the lignite mine made changes necessary.

The reputation of the "Breslau" (as the rally is called by the 4x4 fraternity) was now so strong that the city of Dresden undertook that it would become the title sponsor of the rally for the future.

The paddock is now in the middle of Dresden. It starts in front of the Frauenkirche, going onto the start podium on the Augustus Bridge, which since 2006 is now completely closed once a year for the rally. Racing celebrities like Jutta Kleinschmidt and Walter Röhrl enjoyed giving the start on the ramp.

In 2008 simultaneously with the "Breslau" there was an off-road show in Dresden. Thousands of visitors can now watch the first stage on the obstacle course in the Exhibition grounds. Due to the large demand from exhibitors the show is expected again in 2009, in conjunction with the "Breslau".

The 17th edition of the Breslau rally starts for the first time in Breslau.

The President of Breslau, Mr. Rafal Dutkiewicz has personally campaigned for the Breslau rally.

The rally, which has for 16 years, never been to Breslau, although it carries its name, should have ended in Breslau in 2010.

The flood of the century thwarted that plan and so this was not realised. All efforts have paid off and in 2011 after such a long time the start will take place in Breslau.

After 7 tough days the rally ends where it started for the last few years - in Dresden.

Since its founding 17 years ago, the rally has been through many changes - starting from Munich, Berlin, Dresden and even Breslau (Wroclaw). However, there was no bigger change than taking the Breslau to an entirely new terrain, and replacing the sand and the marshes of Poland with the mountains and the coast in Romania and Bulgaria.

A new challenge which was taken up by the organisation leaders Alexander Kovatchev and Henrik Strasser, when in 2011, they announced the 18th Breslau.

In 2012, the Breslau Poland started in the historic town of Borne Solinovo in Northern Poland. For the first time the rally went as far south as Bogatynia on the Czech border. With 80% of new tracks, new camps and ever better organisation this edition was very popular and should therefore encourage a record number of participants for the 20th anniversary edition of the Breslau Poland.

For its 20th anniversary the Breslau Poland will start in Dresden and finish in Zagan, Poland.  The organisers felt it important to honour the two cities that have most supported the rally over the last 10 years and will be welcoming the race with special events.


Breslau Balkan

The first Breslau Balkan took place in September 2011, starting in the Carpathian Mountains going all the way to the shores of the Black Sea in Bulgaria and back to Sibiu in Romania. The first event enabled competitors to discover a new adventure playground but given the logistical difficulties of organising a race over the two countries it was decided that with Alex Kovatchev’s experience and strong team in Bulgaria, from 2012 the Breslau Balkan would take place in Bulgaria only.

The 2012 edition of the Breslau Balkan saw the number of cars double and the Breslau Balkan has now established itself as a very viable option for the classic Extreme category fans as well as for the new fast Cross Country competitors.

The diverse terrain in Bulgaria meant that there was something for everybody. The fast forest tracks and even faster plains followed by the technical beach sections suited the cross-country and the technically challenging forest sections mixed in with trial sections and some mud meant that the extreme category had it own difficulties. After a tough day of racing nothing better than to arrive at breathtaking locations for some local food at our well organised bivouacs.
 
The free airport shuttle service also contributed to making the whole arrival and departure process less stressful.

For 2013, the race start and finish in Plovdid, Bulgaria. This will again allow for easier logistics given its relative proximity to Sofia. For the first time both categories will have two different courses so as maximise their full technical potential. Given the huge success of the 2012 Breslau Balkan we can expect an ever more competitive field.
